Our Story
Midlakes Custom Services LLC. was founded in 2003 by Greg & Jennifer Vollmer. It all started with Greg, a 6th generation farmer, who grew up farming with his Dad running a small 100 head beef operation, 300 organic acres and taking the odd custom work that came along from time to time. Eventually, a baler was purchased and Greg's entrepreneurial spirit came to life. Greg went all around the county baling hay for anyone who was interested. After Greg’s Dad passed away in 2000 Greg was forced both literally and figuratively into the drivers seat running all farm operations single-handedly.
Shortly after this major life change, Greg met Jenni while she was visiting her family who operated a nearby dairy farm. Jenni, a California city girl who loved to visit Wisconsin at every opportunity, was in love with farming from an early age. Each summer she would make the trip to visit her uncles and work on their 200 cow dairy farm. In fact, Jenni loved farming so much that she was upset with her parents if she had to miss a milking to go visit other relatives in the area while on vacation. Vacation to Jenni was working on the farm.
In 2003 Greg and Jenni were married and that same year they purchased their first forage harvester and started Midlakes Custom Services LLC.. As Jenni became accustomed to running the financial end of the business, Greg was busy promoting the business and soon had several customers spanning from Hilbert to Manitowoc. As Midlakes continued to expand it added a full time employee in 2008 and quickly outgrew the small shop Greg grew up in. The decision was made to move and build a new shop in 2010.
We have a core belief that business is about relationships. Customers are the key to any successful business and we proudly have a great relationship with each and every one of them!
Immediately behind our customers, our employees are the next most vital part of the operation. Greg and Jenni are proud of each individual employee and greatly admire and respect the dedication it takes to meet the demand of our exceptional customers and the grueling summer time hours they spend treating the business as their own.
Finally, we believe that partnerships are paramount to our success and we harbor healthy working relationships with all our partners including an elite dealership that not only provides quality equipment but also exceptional service so we can get the job done.
Success isn't possible without great customers, hard working employees and reliable business relationships!!!
Today Midlakes Custom Services harvests 15,000 acres of alfalfa and 7,500 acres of corn silage, primarily in Calumet and Manitowoc counties. The business employs 10 full time and 25 part time employees. In addition to custom harvesting, they farm 700 acres providing feed to a local dairy, primarily growing alfalfa and corn. The business takes pride in providing dependable high quality services by focusing directly on forage and making sure each client gets the highest quality feed possible!
Being a Custom Operator and having the opportunity to be involved in the dairy industry is what we love to do and enjoy raising our family in that environment. In 2005 we had a daughter Emily and in 2007 our son David was born. Custom Harvesting a business of hard work and great pleasure.
